Re: CHASSIS B.8.GA - 4 I/4 LITRE TRIALS CAR.. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}

After completely dismantling the above engine on account of an abnormal noise which made us fear that the connecting rod bearings had failed, and on examining the connecting rods and main bearings, we found the following:

The connecting rod bearings had worked loose in their housings, especially N°I bearing,
Metal broken away from bearing liners,
Bearings also badly scored,
The same applies to the main bearings, N°7 bearing being very slack, which caused a large quantity of oil to escape behind the flywheel.

The following are the measurements of connecting rod bearing N°I and of main bearing N°7:

CONNECTING ROD BEARING N°I.
Internal diameter of bearing = 2.018"
Diameter of crankshaft = 1.998"
Play = .020"

REAR MAIN BEARING
Internal diameter of bearing = 2.260"
Diameter of crankshaft = 2.247"
Play = .013"

We enclose our order form for the following parts, which we urgently require:

6 connecting rods complete with Hall metal bearings,
I complete set of main bearings,
2 felt glands for rear cover of the crankcase, E.B.1661
I2 bolts } B.B.1369 holding flywheel to crankshaft,
I2 nuts } B.B.208
I complete set of piston rings.
