They suggest, however, that what may fail in one case may be beneficial in another. The static drag perceptible on individual teeth when the field is separately excited seems to have very little bearing on the noise characteristics of the machine concerned. As would be expected this drag is very sharp in the 21 slot case. The 28 slot armature seems likely to prove generally better than the present standard.
