Bentley Fan Cowling.

We send you herewith a diagrammatic sketch (Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}1599) of a fan cowl which we propose to try on the Bentley radiator.

The purpose of this is to ensure that when idling all the matrix is utilised, a.i.e., has cold air passing through it.

We wish you to construct a cowl of this type to fit to a Bentley radiator, the following points being observed in the design of same :-

(1) The cowl is to be tried first with a Bentley Fan.

(2) A special fan will be necessary having the distance between the matrix and the blades increased to maximum convenient distance by shortening the fan spindle

(3) The cowl can be supported from the beading and from studs in the top tank.

(4) The cowl is to cover as much as possible of the matrix and is to extend as far down it as the front engine cross member will permit.

(5) The cowl is not to enclose the fan but to project approximately .100" over the leading edge of same, with the minimum safe working clearance between the tips of the blades and the cowl ring.

(6) The cowl will be tested on a 58 m.m. Harrison Vee matrix radiator which we will hand to you - this will have to be modified to support the cowl.
