DRAFT MEMORANDUM

To Heads of Departments at Conduit Street and N.

Telephones. I understand that the future charge for calls to Derby of three minutes duration will be 3/6d. or for six minutes, 7/-. Every endeavour should be used to entirely discontinue the use of the telephone between London and the Works.

There are two ways of avoiding this great expense:

1. In case of great urgency a telegram could be sent for considerably less money, if the matter can be dealt with briefly.

2. A memorandum can be sent by our special postal service between London and Derby.

You will doubtless instruct all those in your Department very carefully to consider whether a telephone call is absolutely essential before ringing up Derby or asking for any other trunk calls, as all trunk calls have risen considerably in price.

Telegrams. Please give instructions to all those in your Department that careful consideration should be given before any telegram is sent as to whether it is absolutely essential, or whether a letter could not be sent instead.

Possibly it has become a routine to send telegrams to Derby or elsewhere on certain subjects, whereas our special mail service or the postal service between London and Derby could be used with a very small amount of extra delay.

(It is suggested that all telegrams sent by your Department shall be placed before you daily or weekly during the next few months in order that you may give this matter your personal attention.)

B.J.
