RE CAPILLARY TUBE THERMOMETER AND RADIATOR SHUTTERS
FOR 40/50 HP. CHASSIS.

Mr. Johnson raised with me the other day, whether anything was to be gained by fitting capillary tube thermometers unless there is some way of regulating the temperature of the water, and if not what means are to be adopted, and when. I replied to this in my note Bn{W.O. Bentley / Mr Barrington}16/P22.5.19 copy of which we sent to you. Mr. Johnson then wrote on his note as follows :-

"Bn.{W.O. Bentley / Mr Barrington} I am sure that outside shutters will never be tolerated, and I can sign no standardization sheet which contemplates them."

and he said on the standardization sheet for the thermometer

"I regret I cannot agree to anything which is connected with outside shutters"

I have now written in accordance with the attached copy, feeling that in any event we should continue with our intention to fit thermometers even if we are unable to fit any form of shutter, but there is some little hope that a scheme of shutters either inside or outside, can be evolved which will satisfy Mr. Johnson.

I thought if we could design an external shutter which was not of the aero type, but a very thin and neat roll top desk blind, we could make this so that nothing would be perceived except that the radiator was apparently divided into two portions of a different type of blackness. I do not think this can be objected to. I notice on the chassis that there is just a little clearance between the fan and the radiator
