X2066 To Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} From Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. to Hl. By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}2/MJ.30.12.29. WHITMORE'S OIL FOR HYPOID AXLES. Replying to Wor{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager}3/T.30.12.29. The position is that we received a sample from Messrs. Wakefields' of an alternative oil but when tested on an axle on the dynamometer, the gears failed. We decided after this that it was too expensive to try out oils in an axle unless there was some definite evidence that they were likely to be satisfactory. Hl. has since tried a sample oil which we have had from Messrs. Prices'. He considers that the results on his rig justify us trying it on an axle. This is being done immediately. Wakefield's chief chemist is coming again shortly and bringing with him samples of various oils which will first of all be tested on the Laboratory rig. In the meantime we are running one of our Expl. cars with the Std. Price's gear oil in the rear axle. This car has run 5,000 miles and has not given any trouble. We know that this oil will not stand up to the dynamometer tests. If we get into any difficulty we may have to accept that the first speed maximum torque test on the dynamometer is unreasonable. You will remember that on Phantom 1 cars they were tested on the dynamometer with dummy axles because in that case the axle itself did not stand up to the full load tests. The | ||
