Mr. Johnson.

Re Daimler Lubrication.

This system is an advance on the 1910 system inasmuch that the connecting rods and cylinder walls receive more oil as the throttle is opened, but there remains the uncertainty of the amount these parts obtain because the system is still splash lubrication.

The system is inferior to the Rolls-Royce system because -

1. Splash lubrication does not deliver the oil with certainty at the point where it is required.

2. The amount of oil delivered to the cylinder walls is not necessarily proportional to the amount thrown up by the connecting rods from the troughs; (it may go anywhere in the plane of the rods, the point it strikes varying with the speed).

3. When running light at high speeds, it is doubtful whether any oil at all is thrown up to the cylinder walls, because the troughs are then low, and the connecting rods will blow the oil clear of the scoops and will not pick up even as much oil as at a lower speed.

4. Complication of parts which tend to rattle.

In addition to the above it has the disadvantage of delivering too much oil when pulling hard at low speeds, because the troughs will then be high and the connecting rods will act most
