BENTLEY 111 - MODIFIED OIL PIPE TO IMPROVE CLEARANCE WITH IMPROVED GEOMETRY CROSS STEERING TUBE TO PD.199. Please receive herewith :- E.CD.1264 Oil Pipe to Relief Valves to suit Improved Cross Steering Geometry. B.111. The clearance between the cross steering tube and the oil pipe on the engine, shown on PD.199, has proved insufficient, as the parts have been contacting on the B.V. experimental cars, causing damage to the oil pipe; we have therefore altered the shape of the oil pipe to improve the clearance. In order to accommodate the altered pipe without altering the dies for producing the oil pump casing and the oil relief valve casing, the standard type union connection in the oil pump has been altered to an 'Olive' joint type of connection. The union for the main oil supply pipe from the pump to the engine has also been converted to 'Olive' type for consistency. To facilitate the removal of the oil pump or the crankcase sump, the studs fixing the oil pipe elbow to relief valve casing have been changed to half headed bolts, causing a slight alteration to the machining of the relief valve casing. Incidentally, with this altered oil pipe, it will not be necessary to uncouple the pipe from the engine when assembling the engine in the chassis, as is the case at present on both the Wraith 111 and Bentley 111 engines, for this reason, in addition to using common parts for both the Wraith 111 and Bentley 111 engines, the modified design of oil pipe should be used on both engines, if found satisfactory on the experimental Bentley 111 engines. A new type of pipe joint called "Ermeto" is being tested in the Experimental Department at present, and appears to be a better job than the 'Olive' type of joint, if proved to be better by the tests, it could be adapted to this design later on. Will you please detail and instruct the new parts to be tested experimentally as soon as possible with a view to being used on the production Bentley V cars. DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} | ||
