8.B.V. BENTLEY III.

In reply to your notes.

The bearing at the lower end of Wraith yoke has a 28000/23 (Rate 3) feed, whereas the B.III lower yoke bearing has an 8000/102 (Rate 2) feed. The latter therefore has a smaller oil supply. It need have only a very little oil, a 0 size feed should be enough.

The trouble you are having with your rear brakes is in all probability due to the oil leak. To have prevented trouble this should have been cleaned off. If oil is allowed to remain, it dries and the friction rises, resulting in a burnt out brake. You may recollect the trouble you had on MR.3, a lining containing oil. The only thing to do now is to reline the fierce brake.

We shall have to machine the brake carrier plates in future, to prevent the leak.

The damper arm bolts have been fitted the wrong way round, either by us or the shop.

The spring centre bolt which failed is (we think) a 1/4" dia. bolt. Our standard practice is a 3/8" dia. bolt: the springs you have, being experimental, had not this feature correct. The matter has already been attended to.

The front and rear bump buffers are receiving attention now some of the other troubles are settled.

The lack of a drain hole in the front pan was a mistake in manufacture.

The front brake rods on 9.B.V. line up O.K., but there is not much margin for fitting errors or deflection. we may have to use two Spheres on the idler on the pan.
