BRAKES. The front brakes were thoroughly examined in Paris. Apart from one bent toggle pin, the bad judders experienced had done no apparent harm. The shafts were free in the front axle, the bending of the axle having taken place in the centre between the springs only. The pivot lean was standard. Both front drums were cracked; the offside badly in one place and surface cracks all the way round, and the nearside surface cracks all round, but no large crack right across as on the offside. These were caused by judders. The iron drums off Sr's trials Bentley (which was fitted with aluminium drums) have been fitted to 6.B.IV. They are the old type without increased rib depth. You will recollect that at one time, we wore out the nearside MR.3 linings and later, the offside BZ linings. We have now fitted the good MR.3 to the offside and the good BZ to the nearside, and will be able to compare the linings with a normal amount of front braking. We have tried the various levers to the rear brakes as described in your memo Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/AFM.{Anthony F. Martindale}IO/MH.{M. Huckerby}28.2.38. Firstly, we will give you the lengths of the original levers as used up to the time of making these changes. HAND BRAKE LEVER DIRECT LEVER OUTPUT LEVER SERVO LEVER fig.
