To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls} c. By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} c. Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} c. Roy.{Sir Henry Royce} 1013 Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}1/AP.5.8.37 STANDARDISATION SHEET FOR BENTLEY SIDE SPARE WHEEL CARRIER. We can now give some more information about the withdrawal of this Standardisation Sheet. The Sheet returned to us from the Costing Department on 29.5.37. showing a reduction of 17/- per car and a tool cost of £48. 0. 0. We have since learned from the Order Office that the actual tool cost quoted by Outside Suppliers is £206. 0. 0. The original error on the Standardisation Sheet was apparently due to a memo from one of the Departments concerned being mis-laid. In order to make a profit on these side spare wheel carriers it will be necessary to sell about 250 Bentleys with it fitted. Only about 25% of chassis leaving the Works do not have the carrier on the back. As we shall certainly not make another 1000 Bentleys of the present type, we have given the Order Office instructions not to proceed, although £25. 0. 0. worth of tools has already been spent.
