Exhaust Suspension - 20/25 & 25/30 HP.

In reply to GWH{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux}'s memo. dated July 1st, from Cricklewood, re exhaust tail pipe suspension rattles, I would like you to give some further details as to the exact point at which the rattles occur as the present information is rather misleading.

The memo. in question says that the spring is too weak and the clearance between the sliding barrel and the cap of the fixing on the pipe is too small, suggesting that the rattle takes place at this point.

Assuming that the correct spring has been fitted, this seems very strange, as the sketch accompanying the memo. shows a clearance of .75" between A & C and the spring should be choc-a-bloc with .150" compression, thereby making it impossible for the clearance between A & C to ever be less than .225". Incidentally the correct clearance between A & C should be .200", and on several cars checked in the Works none have exceeded this clearance.

The question of sleeve clearance is being taken up with By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} and we are also checking over the various clearances that are being passed in the Works. The original clearance allowed between A & C was .030" and this was increased to .200" to cure knocks at this point when the spring compressed.
