to have been well cured by a new scheme of packing in conjunction with a special bronze washer, but as it is stated that the trouble was primarily due to a "distortion of the shaft" I should like to know what steps have been taken to eliminate this source of weakness in production. GWH.{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux} appears to have found that a very reliable and effective scheme in connection with setting and loading the shockabsorbers is by having solid valves with washers .025 thick under the valves instead of drilling the valves. Will you let me know whether you agree that this is better from a standard production point of view?

EXHAUST SYSTEM. LOP.E. 59326. It is very disappointing that we do not appear to be free of our old trouble in connection with exhaust-blows and burnt washers etc. I shall be glad to have your remarks on this point.

DYNAMO. Although the conditions during the summer-time have been easy from the point of view of testing the vibrator-control shunt-dynamo system, at least there appears to be an indication that there has been considerable advantage in the prevention of continuous unnecessary charge to the battery requiring much more filling up than has been done.

IGNITION. I note that attention had to be given to the setting of the contact points after -
7,500 miles
secondly at 9,350 "
thirdly at 14,900 "
How does this amount of attention compare with what would be necessary on our standard 25 H.P. because it is a very troublesome thing for an owner not employing a chauffeur to have to deal with as of course on each occasion the irritation of mis-fire has to be experienced before the adjustment becomes necessary.

BUTLER STOP-LAMP SWITCH. This appears to have been giving a lot of trouble and to be unsatisfactory in design, although I gather from information available that generally speaking this type of switch, which has been fitted in many hundreds of our cars, is giving reasonable satisfaction. In the circumstances are you designing a switch to take its place which shall be more reliable ? There does not appear to be any satisfactory switch on the market - I am told that the Lucas switch is not better.
