1044 & Spec! To HPS.{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr} c. HPS{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr}/RH.{R. Hollingworth} Bentley 60. Unit No: 3. The above unit, which is at present in the shop, is to be fitted in Chassis 9 B.V. The following alterations are required to this unit:- Crankcase and Cylinders. Sodium cooled exhaust valves to be removed, and solid type fitted. EB.5210. 3 Bores to be chrome plated. Before the block is sent to the plating shop, the internal water gallery should be removed and the camshaft bearings either removed or protected by rubber plugs as was done on B.80. No: 6. Further precautions to be taken are completely outlined in Memo. from the Laboratory - HC/EA2/SK.22.1.40. which was sent to you with our Memo. Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}10/JH.23.1.40. Pistons. The pistons in this unit are purely experimental and have had a preliminary run on the test bed; while the unit is stripped these should be crack tested and inspected. Controls. When this unit is fitted into a chassis we would like the controls to the carburettor to be a good job. We have already notified our design regarding drawings, etc., but further co-operation between the shop and design will be necessary owing to the experimental nature of the engine in relation to the chassis.
