R.R. 235 A (100 T) (S.F. 846, 6-8-19) G.{Mr Griffiths - Chief Accountant / Mr Gnapp} 2460. JS{Mr Johnson's Secretary} for CJ France To CJ. from Bn.{W.O. Bentley / Mr Barrington} Bn{W.O. Bentley / Mr Barrington}13/W4.2.20. RE PROPOSED MODIFICATION TO JAW CLUTCH ON SELF STARTER. Some few days ago we sent through to you the Standardisation Sheet for a modification to the face of the bush which acts as a stop to the Jaw Clutch in the Gear Box operated by the Self Starter, and you replied to the effect that it should not be standardised before 10,000 miles had been run, but that we could proceed with the preparation of the parts. The modification we propose is, as indicated on the Standardisation Sheet, to effect the breaking up of the surface of the bush in such a way that when oily it will allow the Jaw Clutch to be pulled away out of contact with the bush and into engagement. At present we find that when the car is really cold the thickening of the oil either prevents the movement of this Jaw Clutch altogether or else causes its movement to be delayed relatively to the operation of the switch starting the motor, with the result that the Jaw Clutch engages when the motor is running fast and this is detrimental. The present cars are being delivered in a condition which is unsatisfactory in this respect. Mr. Royce has agreed to the standardisation and we recommend you to give us permission to deliver cars immediately with this small but effective modification. Bn{W.O.
