consideration that is favourable to this object should be taken into account.

Mr. Johnson has instructed me that I should give the government to understand that we are not seeking any profit on this work, though we are compelled to charge them the bare cost to ourselves. Since the axles that are at present on the armoured cars will be good stock, and will be returned to us, full allowance should be made in the estimate for this perquisite.

It will be seen that in the centre box no drop forgings are used at all, and therefore no allowance need be made for dies, etc., while on the brake gear of any such allowance only a small proportion should be charged to the government.

It is desired that the estimate shall be for 20 axles, for 50, and for 100, and that some idea should be given to the Government of the probable increase in cost of a complete chassis when it is sent out new from the Works with this axle fitted. This is by by contrast to fitting this new axle to an existing chassis.

The estimate, and in fact the whole of this work is of course extremely urgent, as they wish to get the chassis out to India with these axles about October. I believe the drawings are self-explanatory, but if there is any point not clear, or any point about the estimate that Mr. Rodman is not fully clear about, would you please write to me at -

When sufficient prints have been taken off to enable the work to be gone forward, we should be glad if you would return all the originals to us.
