1743 . 1600 TBB7/L13412. Mr Royce Mr Johnson April 13th.1912. Re Cotton Clutch. ---------------- The cotton fabric clutch will be fitted to cars as standard as soon as the necessary material can be obtained. The present thickness used is 1/4" against 3/16" of leather. This of course renders it necessary to have special aluminium cones and these are being obtained with the utmost despatch. We have about 30 or 40 cotton clutches either in course of manufacture or fitted to cars, and another 50 were placed on order yesterday (the 12th). We have not ordered a greater quantity because we are try-ing to obtain material which is only 3/16" thick, in order that it may be fitted to standard cones in place of the leather. This cotton belting will be fitted to all experimental and trials cars, including the London trials cars, at the earliest possible moment. Standing orders have been issued to the Repair Shop that cotton belting is to be fitted in place of leather on all cars coming in for repairs, in which the clutch is unsatisfactory or requires repairing. With reference to the London [experimental crossed out] trials cars, I will advise you what cars are being fitted as soon as I receive information concerning what cars are available for this purpose.
