Recommendation concerning the use of Bakelite moulded commutators as a more economical alternative to the Mica system.

X4333 Bakelite Moulded Commutators As the method of making commutators by the Bakelite process should be very much more economical than the usual Mica system, I recommend:- (1) That we take steps to find out whether these are made successfully in America. (2) That we continue to use them in the starter motors, in which they have been as far as I know, uniformly successful. (3) That we get some of the same powders for these mouldings as is used for the same purpose in America. Finally we ought to remember that as far as my experience goes, the Bakelite mouldings are scarcely satisfactory on other parts of the equipment owing to the shrinkage that takes place, the distributor moulding becoming tight on it's aluminium support.
