V7310 Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} E.1/HP.13.5.32. re Testing Synchromesh on second gear in Ph.II Box. We find that the quickest and easiest way for you to test the above is to use a pair of gears of the second speed ratio in the position at present occupied by the third speed. This would then give you a four speed box in which the second and third gears are of the same ratio, but would enable you to determine whether the second speed can be operated with synchromesh. The drag in the box would be a little less and the noise also less than if you had three sets of constant mesh gearing, but we think the first point to be determined is whether the scheme will operate at all reasonably. We send you herewith a drawing, LeC.3093 showing the modifications necessary for this experiment. Some temporary restriction of the brake shaft movement is necessary, but this will not matter. If we eventually adopt a synchromesh second gear it will be necessary to make the end of the box removable in a similar way to the treatment that has been applied to the front of the box for applying synchromesh to the top and third gears.
