Re: SG{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} 4336 - Styling for Instrument Panel

Please find attached print of this Styling scheme which incorporates points raised by Kgt after viewing the S4 instrument board mock-up. (See memo Kgt. 6.PJW. 2.5.63, "Viewing Requirements" para. 2).

The fuel level and coolant temperature gauges have both been raised by .187 on their centre-lines to leave more wood between themselves and surrounding instruments. This has also had the effect of improving the overall picture of the panel layout.

Alterations have been made to the outer shape of the 'Picture-plate' holes. Hitherto the flat sides of these holes have tended to look concave, so to cure this the sides are now radiused slightly. Also the lower corner radii have been enlarged from .5 to .75, having the effect of both easing manufacture and improving appearance.

A reshuffle of the warning lamps within the picture-plate was necessary to allow for satisfactory caption layouts. As for the actual lettering, the Rank-Taylor-Hobson type 8 of normal width has been drawn, as the cramped or compressed style does not meet with this departments approval.

A view showing the required degree of chamfer on the edge of all instrument holes is shown.
