Strombergs were not willing to supply us with drawings or photographs of their aircraft test equipment. However, they showed me the apparatus and explained its functioning. Similar but less accurate or well made apparatus exists for testing experimental car carburetters, so that before any running is done on an engine, the mixture is known to be almost correct under all conditions. Attached is a sketch of the aircraft equipment. The venturis were calibrated by the U.S. authorities and Strombergs do not know by what method. Readings are taken every 5° of throttle opening at various air flows, and adjustments are made to the carburetter to give the correct air fuel ratio under all conditions. Ha/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls} | ||
