The Firemaster FM.20 failed owing to lack of pressure. Something like 20% of the powder was left in the container.

The 1 pint pump type extinguisher put the fire out satisfactorily.

The Pyrene P.63 put the fire out very satisfactorily; in fact the petrol residue was re-ignited and the fire put out a second time with this extinguisher.

From the above tests, only two extinguishers can be recommended, and these are the 1pint pump type, using CTC and the Pyrene P.63 using Bromochlorodifluoromethane.

For our cars we would recommend the Pyrene P.63 and the attached photograph shows two views of one of these fitted to LS's car;

To fit the Pyrene P.63 as shown in the photograph an adaptor plate has to be made. This is a piece of flat plate 14 SWG 6" long by 1½" wide, to which are attached in suitable positions two 2BA hank rivet bushes, so that the extinguisher bracket can be attached by two 2BA binding headed screws. The plate is attached to the picnic tray cross stay by a ¾" No.8 mushroom headed self tapping screw and Spirex speed nut, and to the edge of the wooden facia by a ¾ No.8 self tapping screw. A model of this adaptor plate can be seen on 33.B.

Fitted in this position the extinguisher is unobtrusive and can be quickly removed from its clip by a determined pull. Its retail price is 69/6 and the cost of re charging by the makers, is 22/6.
