X4362 It is evident from the results and the complaints that there is room for improvement in the generator we are using on the cars. As you are aware, Springfield persevered with the voltage control machines. They first fitted a number of cars with the Bijur system, afterwards they fitted a large number of cars with the Westinghouse. I learnt when I was over there that they had no end of trouble with the regulators on these machines and they were very glad to make and fit to their cars our present third brush type machine. The only type of voltage controlled generator which is now being used in U.S.A. is a small number of German 'Bosch' machines imported. One of our owners of Phantom ll, Mr. George Iden, who is chief engineer of the London Omnibus Co., has has a German 'Bosch' voltage regulator machine fitted to his Phantom car. The reason he did this was firstly because he was not satisfied with our present machine and secondly because they find the German 'Bosch' dynamo to be so very successful on London 'buses. It may be, of course, that on the 'bus work they do not have the wide range of conditions to fulfill. As, however, the 'Bosch' people have persevered with the voltage regulator machine for so many years it would appear that if we are contemplating voltage regulators we should investigate the weaknesses of the German 'Bosch'.
