HYDRAULIC SHOCK DAMPERS.

The cases for the hydraulic shock dampers to be fitted to the front of the car should be tested to a pressure of 300 lbs/sq.in. Those to be fitted to the rear of the car to 450 lbs/sq.in. It is important that when the shock dampers are initially filled, all air should be excluded from the system before the cap covering the high pressure valve is finially placed in position.

UP TO CAP FACE.

The glands should be subjected to a bench test before the shock damper leaves the Fitters. For this test the shock damper should be filled with oil to the level of the cap face. A special cap should then be fitted carrying a tyre valve and pressure gauge connection. A thick rubber washer should be fitted to the cap face. The pressure under the cap should be raised to 150 lbs/sq.in. and the shock damper lever moved up and down several times under this pressure. If no leak occurs at the end of ten mins., the gland may be considered satisfactory.

The correct level for the oil in these shock dampers is that of the filling plug F.19058. If there is any lost movement in the shock damper after it has been fitted up, this will probably be due to air in the system. An examination should be made to see that the small hole in cap F.74642 is clear and that the three ball valves are all working satis-factorily. We suggest that during road testing, the shock dampers should be carefully watched for any signs of oil leaks from the caps or joints, and before despatch should be care-fully cleaned down, the top cap removed, and the oil level
