Description of a supplementary drive system using a V-belt, clutch, and bevel-gear box to rotate wheels.

has its speed increased and the other has its speed reduced and one track will run faster than the other. The direction of the turn is thus determined by the selection of the direction of the rotation of the
5 wheels 24a and 24b.
The rotation of the wheels 24a and 24b is effected by a supplementary drive comprising a driving shaft 25 which is driven by a V-belt drive 26, or other suitable drive, from the crankshaft 11. A V-belt drive is
10 preferred since it will slip if it is overloaded and relieve the auxiliary drive of the overload. The shaft 25 drives a pair of driven shafts 27a and 27b at a reduced speed and in opposite directions through a clutch and bevel-gear box 28. The shaft 27a carries a gear pinion
15 29a meshing with the wheel 24a while the shaft 27b carries a gear pinion 29b meshing with the wheel 24b so that the shafts 27a and 27b drive the wheels 24a and 24b at a further reduced speed in opposite directions.
The clutch and bevel gear 28 is shown in Figure 2.
20 The shaft 25 carries a driving plate 30 of a slipping-plate-clutch which also comprises a driven plate 31 and a pressure annulus 32 which is keyed to the driving plate 30 by three equally spaced lugs 33 that extend through slots in the periphery of the plate 30. Three levers 34 (of
