X.4335 - BRUSH & COMMUTATOR SYSTEM ON R.R.
GOSHAWK DYNAMO.

Some of the production Goshawk dynamos have not been as satisfactory as we should like in the matter of clean commutation and absence of brush sparking.

The fault appears to be principally due to inaccuracy of brush and brush holder dimensions and some want of rigidity of the brush holders. It is not, so far as we can see, in any way due to the commutator or brush material. We have sometime back complained of the inaccuracy of the brush holder and brush dimensions, and steps have been taken to bring about improvement on the part of the manufacturers of brushes, and brush holders in this direction.

We hope that these steps will result in a reduction in the amount of time which has to be spent in adjusting the brush holders to the brushes and in arranging the brush bedding, but even then we are not certain whether the brush holders themselves have the required amount of rigidity for perfection to be attained.

We do not think the matter is intrinsically very serious, but it assumed some importance on account of the fact that the satisfactory operation of the dynamo is so vital to the general satisfaction obtained with the Goshawk car We feel that at this point you should know of our slight dissatisfaction in case the improvement in the limits of
