INDIA(Production 20 HP. with 4-speed box and Front Wheel Brakes) 4. SUBFRAME.
X5380 ORIGINAL

Thank you for your HS {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} 3/LG101228.

We will deal with the items under the same headings.

(a) HAND BRAKE QUADRANT. We have already dealt with this - see DAZ/M121228. to BY. {R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} (no copy to HS. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} )

(b) FRONT CROSS MEMBER OF SUBFRAME. This should be exactly over the hand brake equaliser shaft - see N. sch. 2614. & 2623. If it is the flange supporting the floor which fouled the upsweep of the chassis cross member at the centre upsweep we agree to your suggestion of moving the cross member and the forward support together back .5".

(c) BATTERY CROSS MEMBER & HEELBOARD. If you look at N. sch. 2626. you will see that there should be .2" clearance between these. This is rather fine. We enclose a blueprint shewing how 14-G-4. subframe was sent out inaccurately made, and how corrected by Hooper's. We agree to move the cross tube back about .5", leaving the battery where it is - see N. sch. 2786.

(d) SUPPORT OF SUBFRAME AT FRONT. We agree to dropping the front support bracket on the chassis frame by .250", and to the insertion of an aluminium packing piece between the pot and the bracket. Will BY. {R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} please incorporate this on India(Production 20 HP. with 4-speed box and Front Wheel Brakes) & SS. {S. Smith}

(e) CENTRE SUPPORTS. We can only get more room between the centre brackets and the frame by either increasing the distance between the subframe and the chassis frame beyond the present .750", or reducing the bracket thickness. We think we can do the latter, and so allow of a .250" thick adjusting washer. The flanges of the bracket can be increased in thickness to maintain the section modulus in bending. Will BY. {R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} please make this modification to India(Production 20 HP. with 4-speed box and Front Wheel Brakes) and SS. {S. Smith}

We think that when the subframes are made from pressings and erected by jig, the degree of error in these cases will be reduced.

Our experience from measuring subframes as delivered to the coachbuilders is that they are often .5" out of rectangular diagonally.
