With further reference to the above, we are now able to give some further information with regard to this. It is not our wish that the engine should be under-lubricated; every encouragement should be given for ample lubrication. One must not therefore, base the question of over-oiling on the appearance of oil in the cylinders, but only in case it manifests itself as follows:- (a) Failure of ignition plugs, due to over-oiling. (b) Objectionable smoke from the exhaust. (c) Excessive oil consumption. The following are points for attention to overcome the above:- (1) It is essential that the carburation should be satisfactory. (Refer to Instruction Sheet No.455). We do not feel we can lay too much stress on this point, it being of vital importance in regard to plug failure troubles. It should also be ascertained that the starter carburetter is definitely turned off and only used when absolutely necessary. (2) The steel caps which hold the felts in position on the inlet valve should be drilled as per paragraph 2 of Instruction Sheet No. 447. (3) In the event of the trouble still existing after attention has been given as per paragraph (1) and (2) above, then the oil holes in the inlet rocker arms which feed oil to the top of the inlet valves should be plugged up.
