To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} and EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} from R.{Sir Henry Royce} c. to CJ. X788 R4/M18.9.22. RE HAWK NORTHCLIFFE X.3408. X.788. This engine must be made to give about 115 B.H.P. @ 2800, to be equal to what we want for this capacity in future car engines. Will Mr. Hives find out if the carburetter is limiting the output through getting to the top of the air valve stroke too soon, which means larger throat and valve passage-way through the carburetter, which must be 1.5 times the present 40/50, or twice times that of the Goshawk (with larger air valve.) Mr. Hives in bringing this chassis might like to test its capacity for speed at Brooklands. The back axle gear ratio should be about 3 to 1 - certainly not more than 3 1/4 to 1, if over 80 m.p.h is anticipated. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
