X5310 TO H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints}, FROM A.J.B. SECRET. AJB2/125.3.25. Copy to - R.{Sir Henry Royce} HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} INDIA. 4 SPEED GEARBOX. We received the following telegram from you this morning:- "TELEGRAM RECEIVED FROM ROYCE AS FOLLOWS:- "REALISED FROM FIRST CREEPING DUE TO INSUFFICIENT "BIND ON SHAFT. NOW UNDERSTAND SECOND AND REVERSE "SATISFACTORY TROUBLE ONLY WITH FIRST AND YOU REFER "TO PINIONS OF INCREASED DIAMETER. CONSIDER SPIRAL "KEYS UNDESIRABLE SUGGEST INCREASING ANGLE OF ACME "SPLINES OR TESTING SQUARE OR EVEN HEXAGON SHAFT." We have therefore prepared a drawing, LeC. 2038., the original accompanying this memo., and a print accompanying R's copy. This drawing shows the stiffer 2nd motion shaft recently asked for by R.{Sir Henry Royce} and also the 3 sections of the rear end of this shaft suggested in the above telegram. These should be constructed in conjunction with the 1st. and 2nd. speed pinions with increased number of teeth. AJS. | ||
