40/50 HP. CHASSIS - ROAD SPRINGS.

With reference to ROY {Sir Henry Royce} /Dn12/BH.7.2.28. and copy of letter received from Messrs. Firths & Sons, in regard to our request for a reduction in weight of the stiffer type road springs, we realise the limitations we have imposed hitherto have prevented them from providing us with lightersprings of this type, but the special rear road springs which we are now dealing with will be used under new conditions. There is now no reason why we should limit the number of plates from the point of view of "damping", therefore we suggest that Messrs. Firths are instructed to produce say two 1500 lb. rear road springs of the 20% stiffer type without any of our previous limitations in order to give us springs which will be lighter in proportion to our standard type, and keeping within what is considered to be the safe maximum stress.

We hand you herewith print F.78440 giving our usual particulars for these springs, which should be sent on to Messrs. Firths so that they can work to the cambers and dimensions given, also to enable them to see the position in which we prefer to have the clips fitted. If, however, in the re-designed springs they cannot give us clips in the positions indicated on this drawing we suggest that they submit particulars to us, so that we can look into the question of accommodating the clips in the position which Messrs. Firths consider they should be fitted.

It should of course be clearly understood that we do not wish to interfere with the 12 sets of 1500 lb. stiffer type road springs, which they have already in hand for us, and that our proposal to obtain lighter springs only refers to the stiffer type and not our usual standard springs.

We are ordering one pair as above, so that we can have them tested out before going any further.
