GOSHAWK 11. X.4219.

I have just received your letter EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}4/LG21.3.22.

I arrived with Goshawk 11. at Hyeres on Tuesday evening.

R.{Sir Henry Royce} went for his first ride on Goshawk 11. today (Friday) into Hyeres. The weather is cold and wet. R.{Sir Henry Royce} has not been very well since I have been here. The impression I got was that he is very anxious that any delay in connection with Goshawk 11. shall not be due to him. He said he could not understand why the production had been delayed two months. I feel that this question of delay is always on his mind when he is asked to make a decision. The day I arrived he received a letter from CJ. saying that the car was 45% better with the S.U. Carburetter fitted. You can imagine that did not improve matters. If it had been said it was 50% better, it would not have been so bad.

I got him to agree that it was quite right that we should experiment with the S.U. carburetter and if it was found that it gave 10% yet alone 45% improvement, we ought to have it. I do not think we want R.{Sir Henry Royce} to say any more than this - we have got to prove the S.U. out yet. and our people in London must be told that the carburetter for Goshawk 11. is not settled but everything possible is being done. I suggest that if the tests at Derby still show the S.U. to be a definite gain, we ought to be getting out one of our own design for Goshawk 11. For instance, the control for the jet - R.{Sir Henry Royce} does not approve of the gland and
