Bentley Petrol Tank. -------------------- In Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/JBD.{John B. Dixon - Fuel Systems}8/JH.13.3.37 we were asked to make a modification to the Bentley petrol tank suspension in order that it might be removed from the chassis without detaching the rear shackle of the rear springs. A scheme for this was issued by ourselves, N.Sch. 3945, in 1934, and was tested but never adopted. It has certain defects in that it does not suit our present method of tank manufacture. On LeC.5578 herewith we show a means whereby the Phantom III pieces can be used on the Bentley as suggested by the Expl. Dept., and we propose that this scheme should be bumped and tested on the next 10,000 miles car with a view to standardisation. We understand that the Works wish this change to be made in order that they may assemble the petrol tank after the rear springs have been attached. The setscrew F.88028 and the washer F.810161 are used although they are not standard pieces according to our new standards. We suggest that they should be used until such time as the new standards are applied to both Bentley and Phantom III, when the parts on both cars will be changed.
