Conclusions.

(1) Since no failures with the latest type of cooler have yet been experienced, we are justified in regarding this type as satisfactory until failures do occur with it.

(2) We attribute present failures to defects in hand soldering.

(3) The failure of two coolers on one car (in two cases) is alarming and we are obtaining further information about these cases in order to determine whether anything can have occurred to the oiling system to burst the coolers.

(4) We do not think that we should yet contemplate changing the hand soldered coolers in service,

(a) Because we have not yet had enough experience of the dip soldered type to be sure that it is 100% reliable and worth substituting for hand soldered type.

(b) Because it is not known exactly what chassis have the hand soldered coolers fitted.

Summary-

(1) The latest type cooler has not yet given trouble.

(2) Until we have completed investigation, any coolers which fail must be returned to Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Ltd. and a new cooler of the latest type should be fitted.

(3) No general change of oil cooler units should be made until (a) the percentage of complaints has increased considerably. (b) We have completed investigations into this matter.

As soon as complete information has been obtained, a further complete report will be issued.
