(Insert in 40/50 H.P. Chassis Handbook No.VIII, facing page 131). 28 - GALLON FUEL TANK. The capacity of the main tank has been increased from 20 to 28 gallons, and the reserve supply from 3 to 4½ gallons. A single tap on the dashboard replaces the two taps described on the opposite page, and also on page 51, for control of the reserve supplies. The dial of this tap is marked Rear Tank Reserve, Main, Autovac Reserve and Off. Normally, the hand lever should stand at Main, when, with the tank full, 23½ gallons of fuel will be available. A catch is arranged at the Main position which has to be depressed to enable the lever to be turned to Rear Tank Reserve. If the car be run with the tap in the Main position until it stops through lack of fuel, the vacuum tank will also be emptied down to its priming reserve. In order to re-start the engine, the tap must first be set at Autovac Reserve, thereby making use of the small reserve in the vacuum tank provided for this purpose. To ensure that the tank shall then become re-filled to its normal level, the tap should be left in this position for about five minutes' running. It may then be turned to Rear Tank Reserve until the main tank is replenished. If care be taken to turn the tap to Rear Tank Reserve before the engine actually stops through lack of fuel, there will of course, be no need to make use of the small reserve in the vacuum tank, as described. With the tap in the Off position the supply of fuel from the main tank to the vacuum tank, and also that from the vacuum tank to the carburetter, is shut off. Fuel Gauge The electric fuel gauge on the instrument board is graduated to register the total quantity of fuel in the tank, i.e. its reading includes the 4½ gallons reserve. A leaflet dealing with the gauge will be found at the end of this book. Leaflet No. 28/40/50. Rolls-Royce Ltd. Derby. | ||
