To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from R.{Sir Henry Royce} -6- R4/G261118 Contd. valve springs have been broken through the valve motion jumping the cams. (11) IGNITION GEAR. X 3129. We understand that Mr. Clark is modifying the six-cylinder aero non-trembler gear for this purpose. The similar ignition on 49 GB seems to run the engine remarkably well, and is better synchronised with the magneto than the old trembler type. It may, however, be necessary to go on with the trembler ignition for some time. It is in the actual manufacture of this and other electrical parts that Mr. Nadin would be so valuable. I should like to point out here that it is a very long time ago that I suggested a larger condenser or an additional condenser on the trembler and contact would reduce the destructive sparking on the platinum points. This has now been confirmed by Mr. Clark as being quite remarkable, and I trust that we shall modify the condensers for both types, taking advantage of Mr. Clark's observations of the ill-effect of the long condenser wire. It would appear that on the old type of battery ignition that a condenser is needed on the coil connected right across the platinums only, and a second condenser on the contact maker near the distributor. I am sorry to say that our trembler coils were the worst parts that we ever made and fitted to a car, owing to their being badly arranged and badly constructed. They were, however, considerably better than any we bought, which I have (Contd.) | ||
