Modification scheme for existing axles to overcome failing single thrust bearings.

X4150 THRUST FOR GLEASON BEVEL PINION TAKEN ON JOURNAL BEARING. This scheme is to provide a means of modification to existing axles in order to overcome the trouble of the single thrust bearing failing. The alteration consists of:- 1. The removing of the brass nut which at present takes the thrust on retard. 2. Screwing the existing thrust housing and providing a ring nut. 3. Fitting woodruff keys in the propeller shaft and fixing the thrust washer. This scheme was fitted to a 14-tooth axle on the Drivers' Demonstration Car. It has run on there 4,066 miles. We have examined it after that amount of running and find that it is in perfect condition. We have also fitted this scheme to 7.CA Car. This car has run for 40 hours on the dynamometer on the reverse. We have not been able to run continuously full power on reverse because the gear box will not stand it. We have run for three minutes full power on reverse 1,000 revs., then three minutes full power 1st. speed. This car has also been run under the worst possible conditions on the road for 1000 miles. We have examined the axle after this time and find it to be in perfect condition. This scheme has also been fitted to 1.EX Car which has run 1000 miles. We have also fitted it to two other axles which, so far, have not done much running. contd:- | ||
