The Dynamo, which is to be fitted on the B.60 engine, for the Ripplet car, has been modified for the 'earthed-positive' scheme and passed to us for examination. In looking over this machine we find that the following points should be corrected before it is fitted on the engine:- (1) The brush-holder springs are very weak; these should be 16+3 ozs. measured on the brush. (2) The clearances between brushes and holders are not quite sufficient; they should not be less than .006" both way, i.e. axially and circumferentially. If it is necessary to rub the brush down, to reduce the thickness, it should be done on the shorter of the two faces, leaving the longer or bearing face untouched. (3) The pressure arm of the insulated holder is too loose on its pivot. Aslo the pin to which the springs are fastened fouls some local insulation when raising the pressure arm. (4) New oilers should be fitted, both the existing ones having lost their caps. (5) we have noticed that a link of insulating material has been fitted on the terminals. This, we think, is to lock the terminals and so prevent them from turning when being tightened. As this addition is not to drawing, if the terminals are faulty in respect of turning, then we think the point should be taken up with the Design Office. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/RC.{R.
