For the attention of Mr. C.S. Steadman. Dear Sirs, Washer- Filler Cap Part No. EW.1666. With further reference to your letters of April 26th and 29th, we have examined the three specimen Washers and have gauged them for the thickness. We find they exceed the size of .15 by, from 5 to 8 thous. You will doubtless realise that it is very difficult to obtain absolute precision in cutting of Rubber Washers in a lathe. Our Operator was very careful at the time of cutting, but there is a certain amount of distortion of the rubber when the pressure of the cutting knife is applied and it is this factor which is difficult to control. The only really satisfactory way to obtain uniform size is by moulding and you will no doubt realise that the cost of producing the Washers by the moulded method would be very costly. The lathe is adapted for cutting 5/32" which is .156, and it has occurred to us that 9/64", or .140 might be more suitable for your work, and if the Washers are then slightly oversize you would probably find them perfectly satisfactory for the groove of your Filler Cap. -1- | ||
