WATFORD EW6. MAGNETOS.

We have not yet had any one magneto of this type in which everything has been right on bench and chassis tests preliminary to a 10,000 mile test. In the main the electrical performance is good but there is still noisiness of the contact breaker which we still think could be largely removed by the right shape of cams. We have emphasized this point repeatedly to Messrs. Norths.

What we think should be done regarding these magnetos, seeing that the standardisation sheet is fully signed up, is to place an advance experimental production order for twelve machines, and hand these in the main to the Test Dept. for trial, at the same time taking one or two at random for ourselves to check for consistent electrical performance.

It is stated on the standardisation sheet that these will not be put on production until a 10,000 mile test has been run. The maximum mileage of any one machine so far is 2982 on magneto No.79171, after which this one developed a rubbing armature and was returned to Messrs. Norths for their remarks. Will Roy.{Sir Henry Royce} please note that we have not yet as received their remarks. A second magneto No.99802 has done 2542. Of this one there is no complaint of noisiness, but this has a bad low speed performance. There is a third machine No.100080 on Mr. Royce's chassis 14.-EX.
