Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from Mx.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} X7 310. Mx{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer}9/T30.5.30 X7 310. PHANTOM II GEAR BOX Examination of condition of gears after Dynamometer invariably shows local plucking of the gear tooth surface, particularly on the second speed gear, see attached copy of memo to Sft.{Mr Swift} Yesterday a chassis was run on the dynamometer with a percentage of Whitmores compound in the oil in the gear box - this was done inadvertently. The condition of the gears in this box after dynamometer test was remarkably good. In order to confirm that this was due to the presence of Whitmores compound, we are arranging to run three more gear boxes with a 50/50 mixture, and will report the results of this in due course. If the results are favourable, we might consider, for strenuous dynamometer testing only, using a mixture. It is of course quite out of the question to use Whitmores compound, or anything similar, in gear boxes in service. | ||
