The rotating flange can then be placed on the drum, and the latter drilled with the flange in position. Care will have to be exercised during this operation, as this flange is close to the edge of the rib.

We are producing a jig to assist in fitting the non-rotating pieces. It will hold these pieces accurately centred whilst they are being riveted. Until it is ready any complaint cases that occur will have to have the excluders fitted by hand, as hitherto. The greatest care must be taken to ensure the annular tongue fits absolutely concentrically into the groove formed in the brake drum. The .050" clearance provided on either side of the tongue is chiefly to allow for expansion and contraction of the brake drum under the load of the shoes and heat, and if too much of it is used up due to fitting the annular tongue eccentrically, the excluder will rub during heavy braking. When fitted this tongue must be tested with a large micrometer to see if it is quite circular, and any high spots either inside or outside rubbed off with a file.

In fitting the screen for the toggle actuating shaft oil drain hole, care must be taken to ensure that it forms a watertight joint with the carrier plate, as we have learnt from experience that the smallest gap here will allow water to enter the drum.
