To DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} from Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} X1360 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rn{Mr Robinson}3/LG11.12.28. 'SS{S. Smith}' SPRING LUBRICATION. X7410 We want, if possible, to start the 'SS{S. Smith}' off with the best method of spring lubrication that we know of. We shall have cadmium plating. We have previously pointed out to you the difficulty of the gaiter entering the pot which holts the back of the front spring. Experimentally, carrying the oil along the side of the spring by means of Bowden cable seems to give greatly improved results and spring squeaks can actually be eliminated in this manner by injecting oil through the grease gun attachment where they will not yield with the ordinary gaiters. We therefore should appreciate any scheme you can let us have to improve the spring lubrication on the second 'SS{S. Smith}' which goes to France.
