To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Swdl.{Len H. Swindell} 1204 Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Swdl.{Len H. Swindell}2/AP.10.7.37 LOCKING OF NUTS ON BENTLEY AND 25/30 ENGINES. Regarding the attached suggestion of replacing the 5.B.A. cheese headed screw and aluminium washer, situated at the front end rocker pedestal, by a hexagon headed screw with steel washer on account of the former being found loose whilst on test, we would pass the following remarks. There are no recorded service complaints since the aluminium washer was fitted in place of the original fibre washer, and therefore do not consider any change justified. The same applies in regard to the 5.B.A. nut which retains the leather washer in the Bentley oil filler cap, and the complaint that it invariably slackens off during test. As we see, judging by the fact that there have been no service complaints some settling down takes place whilst on test and following tightening up by the inspection 'stays put' in service. This action is applicable to several nuts on the unit as per the cylinder head nuts etc. The suggestion, however, is useful in that checking and tightening of these two particular items be regarded as a routine part of the job.
