ROLLS ROYCE OF AMERICA INC. Springfield, Mass. Qy1/W/82422. X3573 August 24, 1922. Copy to S&C. Derby. Mr. Claude Johnson, Rolls-Royce Ltd. London. Dear sir, X2474 X3573 re Bakelite Commutators. Referring to letter EWT5/G14.8.22 enclosing EFC2/T14.8.22 memo., Mr. Platford was handed a sample of Westinghouse commutator when he was here this summer. We attach herewith a copy of letter received from Mr. W.A. Dick of the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company on this subject. These are in every respect satisfactory, are used by nearly all American makers on generators, as well as starting motors, and we have never heard of a commutator bursting. Standard wood-flour bakelite is used, the dovetail has a rather blunter angle than is habitually used with mica construction, as seen from samples sent with B.P. Westinghouse have used Bakelite commutators with micarta sheets in between the segments for about twelve years. Many other makers have now also use micarta between the segments. We have written the Bakelite Company of America for information as to the particular grade of mixture habitually used and will forward this information as soon as it is received. Yours truly, ROLLS-ROYCE OF AMERICA INC. (Sgd.) M.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore} Olley. Engineer. | ||
