X9940 To EY. from Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}5/LG4. 6. 24. RE. ADOPTED SCHEME OF BRAKES. X9940 [crossed out] X9941 The following is a list of modifications which have been carried out on the adopted scheme of brakes and have been fitted to the cars which will run 10,000 miles :- 1. The stiffening web has been turned off the brake drum. This does away with the damping arrangement. We propose running without damping on the front drums. If we get into any trouble with squeaking, we shall have to fix a damper by means of studs, but for the time being, we do not propose doing anything with this. 2. The alteration to the drum necessitates altering the dust cover. We recommend that it is made flush with the drum similar to the model we showed to you. 3. The return exhaust pipe from the hot throttle - the position of this has been modified. This is necessary owing to the alteration to the lower exhaust box now that we have only a single exhaust box. The reason for this alteration is to maintain the temperature of the exhaust heated throttle when the accelerator is fully depressed. 4. The butterfly valve in the exhaust pipe has been made .062" less in dia. than the pipe. 5. We wish to use 'Halo' material for the servo in place of Ferodo. 6. We wish to remove 3" of Ferodo off of each brake shoe - 1.5" at each end. 7. The angle of the cams operating the brakes [crossed out] servo [handwritten above] should be 55°. The two points which we are still dissatisfied with on the adopted scheme are - (a) The adjustment of the servo - (b) Noisy gears operating same. contd:- | ||
