IRON FOUNDRY.

Phantom III - Brake Drums.

We have forwarded to the experimental department, a sample drum with the steel back plate pressing "cast" integral with the drum.

No outstanding difficulty was experienced with this job, though our standard steel back plates are not entirely suitable for this type of drum, and could be improved by following the American practice of punching the ROUND holes periphery at approximately 3" centres. This would also increase the resistance to shear between the pressing and the casting.

This type of drum could be produced at no extra cost in the foundry, assuming we continued to machine the cooling fins from the solid.

We could of course, cast the fins, to shape in the same way as the American drum at an approximate cost of 1/1d. per drum for coremaking, which would be more than counterbalanced by a saving of approximately 16 lbs. of cast iron costing 1/7d. to produce.
