Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}3/R.20.8.38. WRAITH COILS. Further to Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}3/R.15.8.38., we have now carried out further tests in the Cold Chamber on starting, and as a result of these, recommend that we go ahead and build 100 of the R.R. 20,000 turn coils for the Wraith. We understand that this material is already purchased. We should like to emphasise that we have experienced failures with this coil, and though improvements have been made it is difficult to believe that these are likely to overcome the trouble experienced. However, this is our recommendation in order to keep production going while we continue our tests. We are carrying out tests with the T.III coil on the Wraith as this unit has achieved a reasonable degree of reliability under the rather extreme under-bonnet temperatures experienced on this car.
