Trial and comparison of different materials for servo linings.

X7370 X5370 X719. SERVO LININGS. We have tried fitting the Selvedge edge cotton duck linings to servos in the Expl. Dept, and are not at all satisfied with the sort of job that can be made of them. We have come to the conclusion that if we leave the existing cotton duck material, we ought to go to the moulded lining. Our previous objection to the moulded lining was the large variation of co-efficient friction between hot and cold. We have been working in conjunction with Ferodos' and they have made a radially woven material which largely overcomes this fault, and is almost as good as our existing cotton duck in consistency. We have actually done 25,000 miles on this material, and our only objection to it was that at 5,000 miles it became covered with a gummy powder which caused a certain amount of sticking of the pins. However, since then the servo has behaved perfectly and Ferodos' have slightly reduced the bonding on their latest product, of which we hand you a sample. To expedite matters we are hoping to fit this material to six London trials cars, and to give a few to MX.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} for test. If they prove satisfactory we hope to standardise them, and for this reason it would be advisable to keep supplies of cotton duck material as low as possible.
