To HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from R.{Sir Henry Royce} Copy to CJ. [struck through] " " WOR.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} [struck through] " " BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} [struck through] X3614 X4305 ORIGINAL [stamp] RECEIVED [stamp] RE U.S.A. COMPLAINTS. R4/G9/6/21. 3. I shall be glad if you and Mr. Bailey will come as arranged. I am sending you a copy of what I have said so far concerning the American complaints. I hope you will be able to rig up temporarily an arrangement of the carburettor in the new position, so that we are in a position to be certain of our recommendations. Regarding the heating of the throttle only with exhaust gas, I quite agree that it would be very inconvenient and complicated to use both exhaust and water, and it is quite probable that this is not necessary, but I suggest to confirm the difference in the efficiency between the water and the exhaust gas, that you get a thermometer reading of the temper-ature and time of the heating of the throttle as the engine starts and if convenient take the temperature from time to time on the road. It will be necessary to find out what this is with water connected in the usual way, and with the exhaust connected as proposed, shewing on the chart the rise and fall of temperature. We are hoping that the temperature by exhaust gases will be perhaps double the rise it is with water, but not so much as to do any harm to the piston throttle valve.
